With the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft in Pittsburgh kicking off this Thursday, I wanted to share my first and only NFL Draft experience. The 2019 NFL Draft in Nashville felt like football Disneyland. Broadway turned into a giant stage that looked ready to host a concert, a parade, and a touchdown celebration at the same time. As the crowd energy started to build Wednesday evening, the excitement carried into Thursday and lasted through the weekend. I felt like I had walked into a live highlight reel.
The Morning That Started My Autograph Streak
To start the morning, I watched ESPN’s Get Up film their show live. I watched Mike Greenberg, Marcus Spears, and Dan Orlovsky break down the potential draft picks. It felt like a forgone conclusion that Kyler Murray would be the number one pick by the Arizona Cardinals even though they had traded up to select a quarterback top ten the year prior. After the show ended, I asked them to sign a football. They all agreed. I held that ball and protected it like a newborn for the rest of the day.
After the taping wrapped up, the most memorable moment of the trip happened. I walked to the Sun Diner for breakfast. They have counter seating that feels cozy until you realize who is sitting across from you. When I looked up, I saw Super Bowl winning MVP quarterback, Kurt Warner finishing his meal. My brain froze like a rookie quarterback facing a blitz. Since I knew I had one shot, I waited for him to stand up. I followed him outside with the confidence of a fan who had nothing to lose. I asked him to sign my NFL Draft helmet. He smiled and signed it. It became one of the coolest signatures in my collection.
Later that evening, the Miami Dolphins drafted Christian Wilkins with the thirteenth pick. I cheered like I had spent months studying film. The day felt unforgettable from start to finish. As the week begins, Pittsburgh will create its own great memories this week. However, Nashville will always stand out as the draft weekend that set the bar.
