The Day I Almost Met Taylor Swift in Nashville

On April 19, 2019, I walked into Nashville with one goal. I wanted to see the new Kelsey Montague mural that had everyone whispering. The artwork appeared overnight in The Gulch, and the internet exploded with theories. People suspected Taylor Swift commissioned it, and the clues were convincing. She loves a good Easter egg, and Nashville is basically her hometown turf. Don’t mention this to Eagles fans! The NFL Draft was coming to town, and Tim McGraw was performing at the conclusion of Round 1. That detail alone was like a cosmic wink from Taylor. His name is also the title of her first single.

At this point, I did not consider myself a full Swiftie. I liked her pop era and saw her Reputation tour in Atlanta. However, I did not follow her country music closely. Still, the mural mystery pulled me in like a magnet.

The Draft, The Gulch, and a Tough Decision

I spent the morning enjoying the NFL Draft festivities. You can read about that adventure in my earlier post below. Midday, I heard a rumor that Taylor Swift was heading to The Gulch. My brain immediately switched into detective mode. I checked the distance and saw it was a two‑mile walk. It was doable, even if it meant leaving the main event.

I knew I would regret staying put. So, I made the hike and joined the crowd near the mural. Kelsey Montague herself was there painting “ME!” between the wings. That detail convinced me the Taylor rumor was false. I took photos, soaked in the moment, and walked back toward Broadway.

I was unsure of my decision continuing to look over my shoulder and see the crowd around the mural growing in the distance. I thought I solved the mystery and avoided wasting anymore time. Wrong!!

The Moment I Missed Taylor by Four Hours

Four hours after I left The Gulch, Taylor Swift arrived. She posed for photos in front of the mural I visited earlier. She stayed only a short while before heading downtown. Later that evening she appeared on a rooftop next to the draft stage with Robin Roberts. She announced her new single “ME!” from her seventh album Lover. I watched the interview later with a mix of joy and disbelief.

I had been so close. I stood in the exact spot she visited. I even saw the artist painting the final touches. Yet I missed Taylor by a few hours. The universe gave me a near‑miss high five.

My Almost‑Swiftie Moment

Outside of attending the Reputation tour and later The Eras Tour, this was my closest Taylor encounter. I did not meet her, but I met the moment. I took in the excitement, mystery, and energy of a true Swiftie adventure. It also taught me something important. Sometimes you chase a rumor and find a story instead. Sometimes you follow a hunch and end up with a memory. And sometimes you miss Taylor Swift by four hours and still call it a win.
